  3. 4 Outdoor Maintenance Tips to…
Jul52019
Home ImprovementDeck in the process of being stained

When cool spring breezes, turn to summer heat of summer, we often want to put our feet up and relax.

Taking the time to relax and enjoy the short-lived season is a definite must… but before you get too comfortable, don’t forget to consult your outdoor summer maintenance checklist so you know your home’s exterior and outdoor space is ready for summer fun.

Here are 4 outdoor maintenance tips that we recommend for every home owner.

1. Pressure Washing

It is recommended that you pressure wash your deck, fence, exterior spaces and siding at least once per year. It’s especially helpful for wood items like fences, decks and planters’ boxes, because it helps prep the wood for re-staining & clears off residue, which can lead to rotting.

Even on vinyl or stone, pressure washing makes daily cleaning easier and prolongs the life of your outdoor space and home exterior by removing the dirt and grim that can build up over time. It also delivers a great first impression as pressure washing leaves your deck, fence and siding looking brand new!

For any questions about pressure washing or cleaning up your outdoor space, stop by L.B.H. or Onoway TIMBER MART to speak with one of our experts. We can help recommend the right product or tool for your cleaning project.

2. Stain and Reseal

After you pressure wash, it is recommended that you stain or reseal exposed wood to preserve the longevity of your deck, fence and outdoor furniture.

Sealing will aid in keeping moisture from seeping into the wood causing pre-mature rotting and damage.  You can also refresh your colour by selecting from a wide range of stains to match any outdoor decor.

If you’re not sure what type of stain or sealer you need, how to match your current colour, or ideas for something new, stop by one of our locations to speak with our experts about what they might recommend based on your unique space, taste and project.

3. Prepare Your Plants for the HOT Weather

When the temperature heats up, so do your plants, flowers and grass, causing them to welt and melt and often dry up.

It can be hard to keep up with the unique care instructions for every kind of plant or type of grass, but don’t worry – our experts are always happy to share their tips for a luscious lawn, awesome annuals and perky perennials.

For instance, water your plants when the sun is low – early morning, or later in the afternoon. Make sure to drench the flower beds before adding a fresh layer (or two) of mulch. And be sure to use products that will not harm natural wood fences, decks and planters’ boxes.

Don’t forget to ensure that your deck, fence or box is properly sealed it won’t absorb water from the sprinkler or rain.

Stop by one of our stores to speak with our experts on how you might be able to keep your lawn. Gardens and plants looking fresh all summer long.

4. Check the Seals Around the Doors and Windows

Windows are key to create a bright and airy interior space, but if there are cracks in the seals, it could be making your home “airier” that you may have intended.

If your air-conditioned indoor air is escaping through holes in the seals or inefficient windows, it will cause your air conditioner to turn on more often than needed. Not only will this increase your monthly energy bills, but it can increase the wear and tear, increase maintenance requirements and potentially reduce the longevity of the system.

Quick Tip: Since you’re inspecting your seal, also take a look at the painted frame. Sand & repaint or touchup spots that are chipped or pealing to protect the wood against rain or upcoming winter.

If you have any questions about sealing your windows or doors, or upgrading your windows or doors stop by our store and speak with our experts.

Visit either of our two locations to cover all your summer maintenance needs.  Our friendly and knowledgeable staff are here to help make sure that your home and outdoor space is built to last, and can stand up to the elements for years to come.

We’ve been around since 1973, so we’ve seen it all!

Whether you’re looking for new build, special order or maintenance tips, we’re here to help.
