  3. 3 Signs It’s Time To…
May232019

As the summer sun warms the air, homeowners turn their attention to BBQ’s, long weekend get-togethers and lounging in the backyard.  Before setting up the deck furniture or planting flowers, it is advisable to inspect your deck for damage that may have occurred over the winter months.  When inspecting your deck, these are the top three signs to look for:

  • Boards and railings wobble significantly
  • The deck is detaching from the house
  • Rotting foundation

Depending on the extent of the damage, you may have to replace some boards or rebuild a new deck.

1. Do the boards and railings wobble?

Walk around the deck and take notice if any boards or railings shake or wobble.  If boards or railings are cracked or loose, they are a safety hazard and will need to be attended to.  A shaking board or railing does not necessarily mean you have to replace the entire deck, however, if several places are damaged it may be wise to replace the deck instead of having to worry about continual repair and safety.

2. Are the deck boards detaching from the house?

If you notice the gap between the house and the deck is getting larger, it may be time to rebuild the deck.  If the deck is beginning to sag or change shape it is a definite sign it is time to rebuild the deck. Wood loses strength and stability by absorbing moisture and through natural wear and tear so any sagging or shrinking boards could mean the damage is beyond repair.

3. Is your foundation rotting?

The first step in a deck inspection is to determine if the deck is being supported by rotting posts and beams.  As posts and beams absorb moisture, they lose strength.  Over time, the posts and beams are no longer able to support the weight of the deck.  If your foundation is losing strength, it’s time to replace the deck to avoid further deterioration and injury.

Composite Decking versus Western Red Cedar

At L.B.H. TIMBER MART, we recommend considering either Composite Decking or Western Red Cedar when rebuilding your deck.  Both materials are excellent for style and longevity.  Composite Decking is durable, comes in a variety of shades and can withstand exposure to harsh weather.  Composite Decking is perfect for low-maintenance decks.  The finish looks beautiful and the sturdy nature of the material creates a safe environment for the entire family.

Western Red Cedar is a favourite here at L.B.H. as it provides natural durability and it is easy to work with. Treat yourself with a gorgeous local product that will create a backyard deck to be proud of.  As a bonus, Western Red Cedar is used in the construction of fencing, sheds and furniture creating a cohesive style to your backyard decor.

The decision to use Composite Decking or Western Red Cedar can be based on your current needs and time availability.  Our experts understand the facts and benefits of each material and can help you determine which is best for you.  Our goal is to ensure you experience a wonderful summer on a safe and secure deck.

Visit us in store, just outside the Edmonton area, for all of your building needs.  We can’t wait to help you celebrate summer with your brand-new deck!
